Description
Ludwig van Beethoven’s Trio in C Major, Op. 87—composed in 1794—occupies a special place among his early chamber music works. Originally written for two oboes and English horn, the work bears witness to Beethoven’s early-developed mastery of counterpoint, evident in both its form and its instrumental interplay. Its distinctive structure and balanced sonic texture rendered the composition highly amenable to arrangement, leading to numerous early transcriptions. The present edition presents a transcription of Op. 87 for double bass trio—a configuration that is both rare and underrepresented within the chamber music repertoire. The aim of this arrangement is to expand and enrich the available repertoire for double bass ensembles, while simultaneously exploring the expressive capabilities and technical potential of the instrument through engagement with a challenging classical work. Transcribing a wind trio for a string ensemble—particularly one composed exclusively of double basses—demands careful and thorough consideration of register, articulation, and internal ensemble balance. In this edition, particular care has been taken to preserve the contrapuntal interplay and character of the original, while simultaneously making the necessary adjustments to fully realize the expressive potential of the double bass. Certain passages have been transposed or redistributed among the ensemble members to ensure both the clarity of the composition and its musical coherence.
